Anyway.
I tweeted earlier on saying that I'd done some new drawings lately and linked to my Tumblr. I got a reply from someone called Sean Holden saying "Please tell me these are the characters for your long awaited webcomic?" In the words of Jez from Peep Show "I've never really thought about it before but now that I do, I think I'd probably like to do that more than anything else in the world."
I considered it briefly and tried to go to sleep, but I couldn't. In an hour I came up with the bare bones of an entire story! I've had to get back up and turn my laptop back on to write all this stuff down so I don't forget it.
I don't think it's going to be a web comic, I couldn't update regularly, I'd feel too pressured under a deadline and probably churn out crap for a while, then get disillusioned by it all and give up. It's not going to be terribly long, and I want to be able to take the story anywhere.
I'll talk more about it at some point, but I'm so struck by the fearlessness of the Arrested Development writers every time I watch it. Some of the stories in that show are just crazy, they're really not afraid to take the story to places you'd never expect them to go. They make it work though, and it is one of the funniest and most well written things I've ever seen in my life. I'm not saying I'm going to reach such heights, just that I admire it and will strive to do something similar.
I've had little ideas here and there for the last while and they can all be thrown into it too. Going with the whole 'taking the story anywhere' thing, I immediately came up with how it starts and then thought about the idea of not knowing where's it's going to end up, and just making it up as I go, BUT then I came up with a bit of a story line, fleshed it out slightly and it seems legit now.
I'll give a little bit away, it's about a fella who needs to get away from the little town he grew up in. Won't say anymore until I've got a full story but it won't be cheesy
I'm not sure where it's going to be set though, it doesn't even have to be a real place. I heard Ricky Gervais talking about his new film, Cemetery Junction, which is a coming of age type story. They were influenced by a line in Thunder Road by Springsteen "This is a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win". They wanted to do a Britsh film that's "glorious and exciting and cool" Steve said that part of the problem is that you know when Bruce hits the road, he's going to drive for thousands of miles and really leave his life behind, but in England, you drive and drive, and you end up in Leeds
I'll have to think about that, it'd have a real influence on the story.
Also, this does not mean I've forgotten about the commissions I'm doing! I've already explained to the people I'm doing them for that I probably won't get to do them for a while due to College work n that and they understood and were fine with it. I'm not going to start the comic until I complete the commissions. Also, I had a couple done and lost them, since then I've gotten 1 done, so it's been slow so far..
